What is the Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

ORGANIZATION UPDATES

Update from our President and CEO (May 8)

The California State Department of Aging has made it clear all Adult Day Health Centers will be closed until further notice. While our Centers will be closed, our staff team will be calling weekly with nursing and social work support – and to connect our families in need of food and supplies.

We will allow staff not able to make those calls to volunteer at area food banks or Meals on Wheels to help our seniors and others in this crisis as part of their workday. We have made financial contributions to the Saddleback senior home delivery program as well.

PLEASE, check on your senior neighbors and friends – by phone. Drop off supplies or even a treat or two – all while following appropriate prevention guidelines.

Stay safe – and stay home. If our team can help, please call 1-844- HELPALZ.

–Jim McAleer, President and CEO

Due to the governor’s recent statement asking people over 65 to stay home, our Day Centers will ask anyone able to safely stay home to do so.  For those who have no other options, we ask you to check with your doctor.  We will stay open for those few people as long as we can, taking every precaution possible.  Updates will be available on AlzOC.org beginning today AM.

–Jim McAleer, President and CEO

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Alzheimer’s Orange County is suspending all upcoming in-person classes, programs, and support groups through April. This decision was made following recent government emergency declarations, and follow the CDC’s recommendations to avoid large gatherings and crowds, especially for older adults, who are at an increased risk of becoming very sick from this disease.

Although AlzOC’s scheduled events will not meet in-person, we will be broadcasting selected educational classes online via Facebook Live. Please follow us on Facebook to stay up to date on upcoming Facebook Live streaming events and information on how to participate.

We will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves and look forward to resuming our regular programming and service offerings as soon as possible.

If you are in need of additional support, would like to learn more about the services and resources we provide or need someone to talk to, please call our helpline at 844-HELP-ALZ (844-435-7259).

Watch Chief Medical Office of Irvine Clinical Research and AlzOC Board Member, Dr. Dung Trinh educate viewers on what they need to know about the coronavirus (COVID-19) and steps they can take to minimize their risk.

AlzOC has made the difficult decision to postpone this year’s Gala, scheduled for March 21, 2020 at Balboa Bay Club.

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has been widely discussed on every media channel we have.  Fears have grown as the number impacted internationally continues to climb.  At Alzheimer’s Orange County, Acacia and South County Adult Day Centers, we believe it is important to stay calm, look at the facts, and respond accordingly.

We have developed a tiered approach to COVID – 19 based on recommendations from the CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO), partner organizations  and others.  As a provider of services to frail seniors, we believe it is vital for our organization to have a comprehensive plan to keep our participants, staff, volunteers and friends safe.

Our precautions include checking temperatures for anyone entering our Day Centers and disinfecting all surfaces, doorknobs, and frequently touched objects  three times per day.  We are respectfully asking international travelers to refrain from visiting our centers for the time being.  We are working with our vendors to establish protocols for their supportive services and have established plans for staff to work from home, should it become necessary.

These are just a few examples of how we are working to keep our participants, staff and friends safe should the Corona virus spread further.  We welcome your thoughts and ideas.
