Parkinson’s Disease and Communication Challenges: Navigating Swallowing and Speech Disorders (Zoom)

More than 10 million people worldwide have Parkinson’s disease, and the number is expected to double by 2050. Join us to learn about Parkinson’s Disease and the impact of Parkinson’s motor and non-motor functions with a focus on swallowing and speaking difficulties. This course explores the concept of intent and its application in enhancing communication and motor control. Students will learn about cognitive strategies that can improve speech and swallowing, focusing on intentional control, motor learning, and the integration of cognitive and physical rehabilitation techniques.

At the completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the effect Parkinson’s disease has on motor control
  2. Explain the relationship between cognitive intent and motor control
  3. Apply cognitive strategies to improve communication and motor function
