- Course Title: Communicating, Understanding Behaviors and Care Planning in Dementia Care
- Course Description:
In this course administrators will learn about challenges associated with communication and behaviors that frequently occur among individuals with dementia. Practical techniques will be presented for enhancing communication, and methods for responding to behaviors in ways that can address and resolve issues which reduces caregiving challenges. An overview will be provided on advance care planning and end of life considerations, which are important in dementia care.
- Course Objectives:
1)Identify practical techniques for effective communication with individuals who have dementia
2) Recognize common triggers for challenging personal expressions in persons with dementia
3) Demonstrate methods that can reduce and even prevent challenging behavior expressions associated with dementia
4) Identify needs that arise for advance care planning in dementia care
- Course Instructors:
Melissa Klaeb, DPT, Director of Education, Alzheimer’s Orange County. Dr. Klaeb is a licensed Physical Therapist with eight years of experience caring for a family member with dementia. She has completed coursework on the topic of dementia care, and oversees all educational offerings at Alzheimer’s Orange County as the Director of Education.
Kim Bailey, MSG, Programs and Education Specialist, Alzheimer’s Orange County. Kim holds a Master of Science in Gerontology and has worked in the field of gerontology as a lecturer and professional for thirty years. She is responsible for developing and presenting the organization’s education and support programs for individuals and families living with Alzheimer’s disease.
Patty Mouton, Vice President, Outreach & Advocacy, Alzheimer’s Orange County. Patty manages community, clinical and interfaith outreach, as well as the Advocacy and Public Policy activities at the local, state and federal levels. She has served as co-chair of the OC POLST Coalition, now known as the OC Advance Care Planning Partners, since 2010. Patty has been a featured lecturer at many national meetings including: National POLST Paradigm Conference, California Council of Geriatrics and Gerontology, American Society on Aging National Conference and the California Association of Health Services at Home Conference. She has published several articles about the work done with Dr. Vincent Nguyen in the area of Advance Care Planning. She holds graduate certificates in Fundamentals of Gerontology from USC and in Palliative Care Chaplaincy from CSU San Marcos, a BS in Human Services from Springfield College, and is currently enrolled in the Masters of Gerontology program at CSU Long Beach.

This course is designed for senior care professionals who provide care and assistance for older adults and persons with dementia.

Course participants who earn a Certificate of Completion will either be awarded the certificate at the completion of the course, or by e-mail within 14 days of the event, upon verification of all CE requirements being met.

- Course Title: Safety, Medications, and ADL Assistance in Dementia Care
- Course Description:
In this course, administrators will learn about safety concerns for persons with dementia and how to improve safety in dementia care. Also covered are important medication considerations and strategies for successfully assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) for persons with dementia. Challenges faced by informal caregivers will also be discussed, and how professionals can best support them.
- Course Objectives:
1) Describe safety concerns unique to persons with dementia
2) Recognize commonly used medications and supplements in patients with dementia
3) Identify strategies for assisting with activities of daily living in dementia care
4) Describe methods for supporting care partners of people with dementia

Bill Liu, PharmD, MBA, CGP. Dr. Liu is a pharmacist consultant with the County of Orange, Health Care Agency, Adult and Older Adult Behavioral Health. He serves on multidisciplinary teams in community outreach programs that include the Older Adult Services (OAS), the Substance Abuse Resource Team (START), the Senior Health Outreach & Prevention Program (SHOPP) and works collaboratively with the Adult Public Health Nursing Services (APHNS) program. The pharmacist on these teams is responsible for medication issues such as the assessment of efficacy, dosing appropriateness, educating on side effects, intervening in drug-drug and drug-food interactions and is the medication consultant to the multidisciplinary team members.
